Dr Raj Kumar was a famous Kannada film actor. He was well versed in acting. He has performed in more than 230 films and has sang hundreds of songs. He is well known for his character roles. He was the matinee idol of Kannada film and won the hearts of crores of Kannadigas.He worked in films for 50 years.He is immortal in the heart of those who have seen his films.Perhaps he is the only actor in India who has acted acted in only one language.He was the first film actor to be awarded honorary doctorate by a university in India.
And, he had gone to school just for 4-5 years!
Raj kumar’s original name was-Muthuraj.He was born on April 24,1929. at Gajanur,a backward village very near to the Tamilnadu border, in Karnataka.His father-Singanalluru Puttaswamaiah (first word indicates the name of his native village) was a celebrated theatre artist. Raj,inherited his talent from his father. His mother was Lakshmamma.
Raj, first made his entry to the theatre, as an actor in then famous ‘Gubbi Company’.His early professional life was o much difficult. He had less income.
His first film was ‘Bedara Kannappa’,the story of a devotee of Shiva.His film career was an enchanting one.
He married Parvathamma,who, in later years was a good adviser and manager to him.
They got three sons –Shivaraj, Raghavendra, and Puneeth.All of them are great actors now in the film field.
Dr.Raj was unfortunately abducted by notorious decoit- Veerappan, on July 30, 2000.Was kept as hostage for 109 days. The whole state was shook by this. Later he was left unharmed. Raj died on April 12th,2006, at the age of 77.
Dr.Raj was good singer too. He had practiced classical misic.He was a regular yoga performer too.

1.Honorary Doctorate (D.Litt) by MysoreUniversity.
2. Dada Saheb Phalke award,the greatest award in In India for film artists and singers
3.TEN times winner of Film Fare award for best acting.
4 PadmaBhushan award in 1995.This is the second highest award Govt. Of India can award to a person(First being-Bharatha Rathna)
5 State award for best acting-NINE times
6 Many state level awards by different organizations .
7.Kentuky colonel award .
